PROJECT GOALS

The goal of this project is to demonstrate that I have the skills required, as well as a level of knowledge and understanding, to carry out the role of a sound designer. I also want to present the idea that sound design doesn’t have to be exclusively for game, TV and film but also theatre and live events, and that it also doesn’t have to be exclusively paired with visuals but that it can create this through audio alone.

Artefact 1 – ADR & Foley

I chose a clip from a favourite movie of mine as I love the animation style and think it’s highly underrated. I wanted to recreate how I felt when first watching this scene so I was intentional with instruments I used for the music as well as ambiences, certain reverbs etc. to create a certain feeling. I’ve highlighted my main goals for this below:

  • Further increase my skills of automation. Especially in the use of panning, volume and possibly EQ and other various plugins.
  • Continuous practice with sync and timing to ensure that what you hear matches perfectly with what’s shown on screen.
  • To broaden my range of creativity by problem solving how to use everyday objects to create sounds for post-production.
  • Having well-balanced mixes for both speakers and headphones.

Artefact 2 – ISP

For this artefact, I acted as both performer and producer while also bringing a drummer in to record. It was interesting to perform/program instruments from more of a producer’s standpoint rather than an artist. I’ve highlighted my main goals for this below:

  • Extend my knowledge of recording and recording techniques, particularly for drums and considering mic choice and placement.
  • To create a track that fits within the cinematic/soundtrack genre.
  • Using various plugins and techniques such as reverbs, delays, automated panning and volume to create a sound scape that the audience can visualise something to.

Artefact 3 – Spatial Recording & Reproduction

Through this artefact, I shall be learning various techniques using arrays to record audio that is playable over a 5.1 system. It will further develop my mixing skills and understanding of balance and EQ by having to also create binaural and ambisonic mixes. I’ve highlighted my main goals for this below:

  • Learn new recording techniques by using microphone arrays set up in different styles such as a Decca tree and IRT cross.
  • Know how to apply the create pattern to the type of recording being produced.
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of acoustics and how this translates to recorded audio.
  • Create high quality binaural and ambisonic mixes that are playable over a 5.1 system.

Artefact 4 – PDP

Through this artefact, I shall be developing my marketing and promotion skills. Mainly by how to use social media and other contacts to help with this. I’ve highlighted my main goals for this below:

  • Create a brand – Name, logo and tagline
  • Reach out to charities and contacts to build network group that can help with promotion.
  • Developing my communication skills by interacting clients and using feedback from them to improve upon future work.
  • Use social media to my advantage with promoting the message and product that is the podcast.
