For my project I will be presenting 4 artefacts that demonstrate I have the skills, knowledge and understanding of a sound designer. The artefacts I intend to present are my ADR & Foley project, ISP project, a Spatial Reproduction & Recording and my PDP.
The main duties that I shall demonstrate I have the skills for are below:
- Discussing the production’s sound needs with the director or client.
- The ability to find, create, edit and mix layers of sound for a variety of multimedia such as TV, film, games, apps, theatre etc.
- Ability to record sounds that fit with the project and can be built upon and/or manipulated to mimic the desired sound.
- Editing the sounds to sync with the project.
- Recording foley for a project as both the foley artist and engineer.
- Recording additional dialogue (ADR) and ensuring it is in sync with the mouth movements of the characters.
- Composition of music beds for ambience or even character motifs.
Other skills required for this role that I shall demonstrate are a knowledge of sound, music and of software like ProTools. Good communication skills are essential as you must have the ability to work with others as well as good workflow and organisational skills. Time management skills are required as you will need to work to deadlines and be able to work under pressure. An understanding of how to record and edit sounds is vital as this covers a large part of the role. Attention to detail is key and perhaps the most important is being able to think creatively and work outside the box.
My aim through this project is to demonstrate that sound design can be with and without visuals. I intend to do this through my artefacts as my ADR & Foley project has me designing the sound for a scene from the animated movie ‘Coraline’ where the audio and visuals work together to evoke emotion and aid each other in the storytelling. My ISP project is simply audio but through using certain sounds and various production techniques such as automation and use of plugins, I have created a soundscape in the cinematic/soundtrack genre that I hope will allow the audience to create visuals in their mind relating to what they hear. For my Spatial Recording & Reproduction project, I will use recording techniques such as various microphone arrays and mixing techniques to produce and immersive mix that will allow the listener to feel as if they’re in the venue.
I have purposefully added a two-week buffer before submission of this project to allow for any mitigation require as well as planning ahead for unforeseen circumstances. I believe this shows good time and project management as well as preparing for the future when work projects may require additional time used but still being able to meet the deadline.
