The intentions for this project was to enhance and develop understanding of how to promote and market a product/oneself which is a very important set of skills to have in the music industry. In order to get work, it relies mainly on self-promotion and what avenues to exploit that are best fitted for what you’re marketing/promoting. The brief for this project was to:
- Create a sound production ‘market facing’ opportunity
- Plan and deliver the product
- Evaluate how effective the delivery of this is
I decided that I wanted to either create a podcast (or series) or an audio and visual event. The ways in which to promote for this would be different as with an event involved there is the logistics to think of such as locating and hiring a venue as well as having to think of ticket sales. My lecturer gave very good advice that when you’re thinking of something to promote it should be a topic you enjoy or connect with as you’re more likely to be engaged and enthusiastic about the project. I have detailed my initial ideas of topics below:
- Paranormal/unexplained – podcast
- Mythology – podcast
- Stories of Drs, nurses, other people and experience during COVID – podcast/event (working title “the year the world stood still” or “when the world stood still”)
- Stories of people with disabilities and their experiences – podcast/event
I eventually decided on a podcast series that revolves around females sharing their experiences living with chronic, auto-immune and invisible illnesses. I also wanted to use this to touch on their experiences within the healthcare sector as a result of the gender health gap. My aim with this project was to build my profile in the recording and production of podcasts sector within the sound industry.
I intended the initial launch to be made of 3 episodes, with each one touching on different conditions and how they’ve affected the individual featured in their daily life. However due personal circumstances, one of my participants was unable to make her session and then as a result of time constraints, I was unable to fill this slot. I went ahead with my idea but had 2 episodes instead.
I also conducted market analysis on my target audience, market size complete with statistics, competition analysis and a case study on a similar piece of work as what I was intending. This allowed me to research further into these topics and the market that I was going into so I had a better idea of how to aim my promotion.
