My main source of information across my artefacts has been the lecture materials provided. I found them to be insightful and full of the knowledge required to learn about various techniques and methods of audio. There is a wide range of materials available from lecture notes, images, videos on techniques and interviews as well as demonstrations performed by the various lecturers.
Most of the sources listed here are videos and that’s because I feel that I’m more of a visual learner and that by watching tutorials help me learn better.
I found this video to be very interesting for a sound designer. It talks about how sound design has a spectrum of realistic and stylistic with non-animation tending to be more on the realistic side. However, in Tarantino’s films he tends to blur the lines by layering stylistic (non-real) SFX with realistic sounds to enhance the sonic image. It talks about how using the variations of this when it comes to different characters (good and bad) it can produce a cathartic response from the audience.

I found this interview with Joanna Orland to be fascinating as she talks about creating audio style guide as her approach to beginning work on a project. By having a clear, artistic vision she is able to accurately record and source audio that complements the piece she is working on. The part that caught me in particular was her discussing how she researched psychological theories of sound and the effect they have on us emotionally.

I found this series on YouTube to be particularly interesting regarding recording drums and how certain famous songs were recorded. These helped influence me in my approach to recording drums and that it’s not always mics that give certain sounds but additions or subtractions you can make to the kit to aid you in achieving the sound you want.
