METHODS OF WORKING

Artefact 1 – ADR & Foley

I initially intended to use the RODE NTG3 shotgun mic to record my Foley as it is able to produce natural sound with very little self-noise and a nice flat frequency response (FR) with a very small peak in the high end (around 5kHz). With the most obvious difference being that the NTG3 is a large diaphragm condenser and the SM57 being a dynamic microphone, they are both very durable mics that provide a high-quality sound with a fairly similar FR (NTG3 being 40Hz-20kHz and the SM57 being 40Hz-15kHz) that only differs round the high end. For what I was recording it worked as a fairly useful substitute.

I was careful about my mic positioning when recording the foley for this project. When recording the footsteps for each character (trainers for Coraline, wooden sticks and drum brushes for Other Mother) I angled the microphone toward the ground but not too much as I wanted to accurately recreate how the footsteps would sound from someone in an upright position. As I was using a dynamic mic that was set to cardioid, I didn’t have to worry about it picking up sound from the sides and rear.

For the music I composed for the video clip, I researched the composer of the movie and chose similar instrumentation and techniques he used (write about the interviews in here a wee bit and remember to include the links in the source bit).

Artefact 2 – ISP

To record the OH I used a stereo recording technique of Spaced Pair (SP). My reason for using this and not other stereo recording techniques, such as XY and ORTF, is that the spaced pair creates a wider stereo image and as I was wanting the drums sound to have almost a distant quality to it, as if recorded in another room, I felt this option was the best to use. The SP technique uses time difference to create a stereo image with the wider the pair is, the wider the stereo image.

I choose instruments with minimal distortion as I wanted the track to have a dreamy, ethereal feel to it so I opted for more lush, shimmery sound pads instead of ones that are oscillated by harsher sounding saw waves. A production technique that I applied heavily to this track was reverb. I used a variety of hall reverbs on each track to make the instruments used sound otherworldly.  I wanted to create a lot of space and dimension in this track that I used reverb to help me achieve.

Artefact 3 – Spatial Recording & Reproduction

For this artefact, I will be learning about various microphone arrays and techniques such as a Decca tree, Hamasaki square etc. and how to apply these in different venues. I will be extending my knowledge of how to use mics that are familiar to me by putting them in different set ups, recording in a larger venue and also how to record something that is playable over a 5.1 system.

I shall be applying the knowledge that I gain through creating this project to produce binaural and ambisonic mixes. I will also be attempting to record video of the venue recorded in to act as a visual aid to the immersive recording that I will produce

Artefact 4 – PDP

For my PDP, I have decided that my main form of promotion will be through an Instagram account. I will also be using the charities that I’m liaising with to promote my content through their social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and their websites. I made the decision to not create a TikTok account on the fact that I’m not familiar with the platform and how to work it. This, however, would be something that I’d look to creating in the future for this project.

I decided that one of the best ways to market this project was through using charities and their reach and influence. I also knew that people who follow or keep up to date with these charities would be a potential audience as they’re more likely to listen and support something that relates to them or a family member. I also decided to reach out to external parties namely Halina from the ‘A Sonic Hug’ podcast and ‘The Big Light’. This is a production company that has also produced ‘A Sonic Hug’. I emailed them to ask if they could offer any advice or also help to promote my podcast.
